Ukraine Moves Forward in Talks to Join the EU

Hungary has stopped blocking Ukraine’s talks to join the EU after an agreement on language rights.

Ukraine has moved forward in talks to join the European Union, or EU. The EU Council agreed to start two more groups of talks. Four of the six groups are now open. Hungary stopped blocking this step after an agreement on rights for Hungarian people in Ukraine.

The agreement gives more protection to teaching in minority languages. These are languages of smaller groups in the country. Ukrainian is still the language of state education.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungary’s Prime Minister Peter Magyar may meet in Brussels this week. This would be their first meeting as leaders of the two countries. No date is set. Ukraine still needs to make many changes to join the EU. Every EU country must agree to finish each group of talks.
