EU Plans More Protection in the Arctic

The EU wants more ships and better protection for cables under the sea as the Arctic changes.

The European Union shared a new Arctic plan on October 20. The Arctic is the area around the North Pole. Rising temperatures melt its ice. This opens new paths for ships. Russia has more military activity there. China has growing interests there. US President Donald Trump also threatened to take control of Greenland.

The EU wants more ships that break ice. It plans to protect and repair cables under the sea. These carry information. It also wants better transport links with Europe. It plans closer work with countries like Canada and Norway.

The EU still says no to new oil and gas projects in the Arctic. It will not buy their oil or gas. It wants more clean energy instead.
