Thwaites Glacier is a huge area of ice in West Antarctica. Scientists used computers to study its future. They tested what happens if ocean water stops melting the ice. Thwaites still lost ice for 150 years. Nearby Pine Island Glacier grew thicker. This test does not show a real-world future.
In a separate study, scientists kept the climate unchanged in their computer test. Thwaites could raise sea levels by up to 1.2 inches by 2100. That is about twice the average rise in earlier tests. Their work looked at how seawater gets under the ice.
Cooling the ocean may not stop all future ice loss. But cutting gases that warm Earth still matters. More ocean warming could make Thwaites lose even more ice.
