Hungary's lawmakers voted to change a 2021 child protection law. The vote was 139 for and 51 against. Former leader Viktor Orban's government introduced the law. It banned content about same-sex love and gender diversity for children. The new rules will instead protect people under 18 from content that can seriously harm their development.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar took power in May. He said the changes would follow European Union rules. The European Union welcomed the vote. A rights activist also welcomed it but said more work was necessary. Other limits remain. For example, same-sex couples still face rules against adopting children. Orban's party opposed the change. Magyar's party had enough votes to pass it without help from other parties.
