Goldman Sachs says AI, or artificial intelligence, could replace up to 9% of workers. That is about one in 11 people. Economist Joseph Briggs made the estimate. The bank expects AI to help people produce 15% more in the same amount of time in the U.S. and other rich countries. Companies could also hire fewer people. This could cut the number of jobs by another 3%.
Briggs says more people could lose jobs when the economy slows. He studied how technology changed jobs over many years. Companies often replaced workers with machines during bad economic times. But losing a job does not always mean a long time without work. Some people find new jobs quickly. Others stop working or looking for work.
For now, job cuts linked to AI have fallen from their spring high. Only 23% of U.S. workplaces use AI in their regular work. The economy and job market have stayed strong in 2026. Briggs says this may give companies less reason to cut spending on workers.
