German State Reports 358 Child Marriages

A German state recorded 358 child marriages. Courts legally ended eight of them.

Baden-Württemberg is a state in southwestern Germany. Since 2012, officials there have recorded 358 child marriages. These marriages took place outside Germany. Courts legally ended eight marriages between 2018 and 2024.

One case involved an 11-year-old girl from Iraq and a 17-year-old boy from Iraq. A court ended their marriage in 2020. Officials closed the other 350 cases in different ways. Reasons included a husband or wife's death, a young person becoming an adult, or a decision not to ask a court to end the marriage.

Germany has had a law against child marriage since 2017. In 2024, its parliament passed new rules to protect young people in marriages that took place abroad.
