US bases and British families plan for emergencies

The US wants major military bases to work without outside help for 90 days. Britain asks families to keep food, water and other supplies for three days.

The Pentagon, which leads the US military, is making a new plan. It wants every major military base in the main part of the US to do its most important work without outside help for at least 90 days. The plan covers electricity, water, fuel and ways to send messages.

The plan is called FORTRESS. Bases would make their own electricity, and the plans include nuclear power and large batteries. They would also keep extra supplies, including medicine and spare parts. For the most important supplies, the military wants at least two places to get or make them.

In Britain, the government asks families to prepare for three days without basic services. It recommends three litres of drinking water for each person each day, plus food that needs no cooking or fridge. Families should also keep cash, torches and supplies for basic medical care.

Britain's Be Ready campaign started on 22 October and covers bad weather and other emergencies. It is the first part of a three-year campaign. Neither government has said a new war will start soon. It is not clear whether the two governments planned these efforts together.
