Crowds celebrated in Belgrade, Serbia's capital, on Sunday. President Aleksandar Vučić accepted that his party lost an early election for parliament. His party controlled the government and held power for years. The crowds supported a movement against the government. Students supported this movement.
The election came after almost two years of protests. These began after a concrete roof over part of Novi Sad railway station fell in November 2024. Sixteen people died. People were angry about claims of dishonest behaviour by people in power and poor checks by officials.
Students led the protests, which spread across Serbia. People with different political views joined them. They wanted political change. They also wanted people to take responsibility for what happened.
After voting ended, election workers began counting votes across Belgrade. The country's election officials shared early figures. These showed that more people took part than in any parliamentary election in over 30 years.
