The Dutch government wants to cut 25,000 full-time jobs by 2035. This means cutting 16 per cent of its jobs. The plan is part of an effort to spend less money. The government also wants staff to use artificial intelligence, or AI, to do more work.
The government aims to cut costs by €900 million by 2027. Its goal rises to €3.5 billion by 2035. The cuts will not affect every part of the government. The police and defence services are not part of the cuts.
The government plans to set goals for using AI in the first three months of 2027. It will also make plans to save money through AI. It wants this technology to help staff work better.
Eric van der Burg is a Dutch government official. He wrote to parliament about the plan and said he wanted a smaller government with simpler, smarter ways of working. Different parts of the government already use AI for some work. Van der Burg wants to use it more widely.
