On 26 October, OpenAI announced three results from its AI models. In maths, the company says its AI answered a question about how waves behave. The answer covers every number of space dimensions. OpenAI says it also answers two other maths questions.
In a separate project, the AI challenged an important idea about computers. This idea says certain problems take a very long time to solve. Hundreds of research papers use this idea. OpenAI says its AI showed that it is false, but independent experts still need to check the answer.
Separately, the company says its AI found proofs about the physics of very small particles. These include an explanation of the strong force between some particles. Physicist David Gross will lead a group to examine this work.
OpenAI has shared the maths and computing work online, including proofs that computers can check. The physics group will write its own explanation before sharing the AI material. The computer experts say their involvement does not mean they accept the result. OpenAI says it does not want academic credit for the discoveries.
