Lula da Silva has won another election for president of Brazil. He finished behind in the first round of voting but won the second round. No other candidate has done this since Brazil started its two-round system in 1989. This is his fourth presidential election win.
Lula turns 81 on 27 October. His parents were farmers and could not read or write. As a boy, he sold things in the street and cleaned shoes for money. Later, he worked in a factory making things from metal.
He became a leader of a group of workers and helped them fight for their rights. He helped start the Workers’ Party in 1980. After three election losses, he won in 2002 and became president for two terms.
Lula went to prison in 2018 and left in 2019. In 2021, Brazil’s highest court cancelled the court decisions against him. He could run for president again, and he won in 2022. Now, after another win, he promises his best time as president. But Brazil remains deeply divided, and political groups on the right hold most seats in Congress.
