The Pentagon leads the U.S. military. It is making a plan called FORTRESS for major bases in the main part of the United States. The plan would require these bases to be able to do their most important work for at least 90 days without outside help.
The plan covers electricity, water, fuel, and ways to send messages. Bases would make their own electricity and keep extra medicine, equipment, and other supplies. For the most important supplies, the military wants at least two places to buy or make them.
Britain started its Be Ready campaign on October 22. It asks families to keep enough supplies for three days without basic services. Each person needs three liters of drinking water a day. Families should also keep food that needs no cooking or cold storage.
The British list includes flashlights, extra batteries for charging phones, medical supplies, and a radio that works without power from the wall. Families should keep food and water for pets, too. They should have cash in case cards and cash machines stop working.
Neither government says a new war is about to start. Britain's campaign also covers dangerous weather and other emergencies.
