Lula Wins Brazil’s Election for a Fourth Term

Lula won Brazil’s presidential election. Many people celebrated, but his opponent rejected the result. Environmental groups welcomed Lula’s win.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the election on October 25, 2026. He received 51.8% of the votes, and Flávio Bolsonaro received 48.2%. Lula won by about 4.4 million votes. He will serve as president for a fourth time.

Thousands of people celebrated on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo. They waved flags, danced and sang. The celebrations continued into Monday. People in other Brazilian cities also celebrated.

Bolsonaro did not accept the result. He said he would ask a court to cancel it. He pointed to a decision by Brazil’s highest court. The court gave people two extra hours to vote.

Environmental groups welcomed Lula’s win. Since his return to power in 2023, the cutting of trees in Brazil’s Amazon forest has fallen to its lowest level since records began in 1988. It fell 42% in the last year alone. But the forest is still getting smaller.

Lula also faces a difficult political situation. Bolsonaro’s party won the most seats in both parts of Congress, the group of people who make Brazil’s laws. This could make it harder for Lula to pass new laws.
