Crowds celebrated in Belgrade, Serbia's capital, after President Aleksandar Vučić said his party lost an early election. People voted to choose the country's law-making body. Students supported the movement against his party.
The election came after almost two years of protests against the government. Early figures from election officials showed the highest level of voting in this kind of election in more than 30 years. Officials began counting votes across Belgrade after voting ended.
The protests began after a concrete roof over part of Novi Sad's train station fell in November 2024. The disaster killed 16 people. People were angry about possible dishonesty and poor checks by the people in charge.
Students led the protests, which spread across Serbia. People with different political views joined together. They wanted political change and demanded answers from those responsible. Vučić accepted his party's loss on Sunday, and supporters celebrated the defeat of a party that was powerful in Serbian politics for years.
