New York City plans to end rides in carriages pulled by horses. The City Council voted for a bill to stop the business over time. The rides will end by the middle of 2028. The business has a history of more than 165 years.
The industry has long promoted these rides to tourists. Driver and horse stable manager Conor McHugh spoke at a public meeting earlier this year. He said people from around the world visit New York for a carriage ride in the park.
But people have also worried about the horses' care and public safety for many years. Efforts to stop the rides grew stronger this year. In June, a horse ran away. A teenage tourist from India, Romanch Mahajan, died in an incident involving that horse.
