Meta Tests Humanoid Prototype as Work Begins on Max 2

Meta and Shanghai-based Fourier reportedly developed the humanoid prototype Max in roughly three months. The project supports internal robotics research and Meta’s ambition to give its AI agent Muse a physical form.

Meta has built a prototype humanoid robot with Chinese robotics company Fourier in approximately three months, according to The Information. Known internally as Max, the robot stands about 1.5 meters tall and weighs roughly 106 pounds. Meta describes the collaboration as internal research and experimentation, with no plans to sell the units.

Powered by Nvidia’s Jetson Thor chip, Max features a facial-expression display, integrated speakers, and five-fingered hands capable of grasping small objects. Meta’s robotics team traveled to China to collaborate with Fourier. The company subsequently demonstrated Max to some employees at an internal robotics summit in late August.

Development of Max 2 began in September, with planned upgrades including a redesigned torso, improved hands, a projector, and additional sensors intended to help it negotiate stairs. Although work on the successor is underway, Meta has not set a launch date for a humanoid product.

Meta envisions humanoids as a physical embodiment of Muse, its AI agent, and hopes they will perform household tasks. Nvidia, which supplies Max’s chip, agreed to invest $3 billion in Meta and broaden their collaboration on Muse.

The project follows Meta’s May acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence, a San Diego startup developing AI software for robots. Its team joined Meta Superintelligence Labs, which houses the group leading Meta’s humanoid efforts. Fourier, based in Shanghai, unveiled its GR-3 humanoid in August 2025 as a companion robot, including for older adults.
