Good Food Does Not Always Look Perfect

Many shoppers worry about food prices. But they need to trust food before they buy it, even at a low price.

Almost three in four Americans worry about high food bills. But people and businesses still throw away safe food. The U.S. government says 30% to 40% of food goes to waste. Food waste also adds to global warming.

Some companies sell fruits and vegetables with unusual shapes for less money. But many shoppers think cheap food is not good. Other companies make new foods from leftover parts, like fruit skins. These foods often cost more than normal foods.

Research shows that labels can help. Calling a vegetable “ugly” can show that only its looks are different. A clear, well-designed logo can also help people trust food. Low prices and promises to help the planet are not enough. Shoppers need to believe the food is good.
