Samsung has introduced more detailed sleep apnea detection for its Galaxy Ring after receiving FDA approval in July 2026. Sleep apnea involves interruptions in breathing during sleep. The updated feature uses AI to calculate how often these interruptions happen each hour.
Users must sleep for at least five hours on each of two nights within a ten-day period to receive results. The Samsung Health Monitor app can then indicate mild, occasional, or frequent sleep apnea. These results may offer clues to people who feel exhausted even after sleeping through the night.
Samsung first received FDA authorization for sleep apnea detection on Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring devices in February 2024. That earlier approval covered only signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea. Although the updated feature provides more information, Samsung stresses that only a doctor can make a proper diagnosis. The readings can support discussions with healthcare professionals rather than replace a medical assessment.
The advanced feature is available on Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch 9 running Wear OS 7.0 or later. Samsung also plans to add it to Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8 through future software updates.
