New historical research shows that Exeter took a harder line on witchcraft than most of England. While much of the country softened its approach, the city continued to pursue people accused of being witches.
Authorities also prosecuted people known as service magicians. These local practitioners used magic to investigate minor crimes.
Their work was intended to help rather than harm. Even so, Exeter's authorities treated them as targets, showing how far the city's campaign against witchcraft extended.
