New data suggest that artificial intelligence is becoming a more visible part of work life, but it is also creating anxiety. In the United Kingdom, a report shared by GMB Union found that 48% of workers fear losing their jobs to AI. It also found that 29% already have AI tools in their workplaces, while 26% say AI has started taking over some of their tasks. Beyond job loss, employees are also uneasy about AI being used to track performance or monitor them.
A separate Stack Overflow study points to rapid growth in AI adoption, with usage up 90% year over year and daily use rising 164%. Even as employers begin to integrate autonomous AI agents, human oversight remains central: 63% of workers rarely or never let AI agents complete tasks without it. Companies themselves are cautious, with 82% worried about accuracy and 77% concerned about security and privacy.
The World Economic Forum says 92 million jobs could be displaced by 2030, while 170 million new jobs may be created. It expects demand to rise for AI, data management, network systems, cybersecurity, and general tech literacy. GMB Union says companies should not focus only on profit, and it argues that governments should protect workers through laws or guaranteed retraining.
