As Partner Country at SIAL Paris, held October 17–21, 2026, India presented sustainable agriculture and women’s empowerment as central to its food economy. More than 140 Indian exporters participated under the leadership of Jawed Ashraf, chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation. He described a transformation driven by small farmers, combining reduced chemical use with technologies such as drones, sensors and artificial intelligence to manage resources more efficiently. The United Nations’ designation of 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer provided a further focus for the presentation.
Among the participants was Priyanka Rhushikesh Mohite, a certified agricultural drone pilot from Maharashtra. After securing a place in a government training program for rural women, she completed a month’s instruction in Pune and began flying in August 2024. Her drone applies nano fertilizers and distributes seeds. She said watering an acre, previously a full-day task requiring around 200 liters, takes seven to eight minutes and 10 liters with the drone. Beyond those practical gains, the profession has brought her community recognition, greater influence and opportunities to encourage other women.
These agricultural changes accompanied a broader commercial agenda. Negotiations on the EU–India free trade agreement concluded in January 2026, with signature expected by year-end. Such agreements reduce or eliminate customs duties and facilitate cross-border commerce. Ashraf argued that farmers and smaller enterprises could benefit if they satisfy European requirements and reach buyers. For food exporters, he emphasized recognizable brands, stronger logistics and products distinguished by more than volume or price. Packaged, ready-to-eat and premium foods featured prominently at the exhibition.
