Women Farmers Help Shape India’s Food Message in Europe

India’s presentation at SIAL Paris connected more sustainable farming and women’s independence with plans to reach European food buyers.

India highlighted changes in farming at SIAL Paris, held from October 17 to 21, 2026. More than 140 Indian exporters participated in its exhibition area, led by Jawed Ashraf, chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation. He described small farmers adopting methods that use fewer chemicals and technology that helps manage resources. With the United Nations naming 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, women’s role was another central theme.

One participant was Priyanka Rhushikesh Mohite from Maharashtra. Through a government program for rural women, she completed a month of drone training and began flying in August 2024. Her drone applies fertilizer and distributes seeds. According to Mohite, watering an acre previously took a full day and about 200 liters of water. Using the drone takes seven to eight minutes and 10 liters. Becoming a pilot has also given her greater recognition and influence in her community.

The event also focused on trade. India and the European Union concluded negotiations on a free trade agreement in January 2026, with signing expected by year-end. Such agreements reduce or remove import taxes and make trade easier. Ashraf said opportunities for farmers and smaller businesses depend on meeting European market requirements and connecting with buyers. He also urged food exporters to develop recognizable brands rather than compete only on quantity and price.
