Scientists found 27 old bones from a snake's back in Gujarat, western India. The snake, Vasuki indicus, lived about 47 million years ago. They think it was between 10.9 and 15.2 metres long. Its exact length is not certain. It may have been as long as Titanoboa, another huge ancient snake.
Vasuki probably moved slowly. It may have hidden and waited for animals to come close before catching them. It may have lived on land or in wet areas with shallow water.
India was much warmer then. The heat may have helped this snake grow so large. But heat was not the only reason. Food and a suitable place to live also affect a snake's size.
