A bridge for wild animals opened in December near Larkspur, Colorado. It crosses six lanes of Interstate 25. It is the largest animal bridge in North America. Bears, elk and other animals can cross the road safely.
The crossing also has five tunnels for smaller animals or animals afraid to use the bridge. Fences guide animals towards the safe crossings. After ten months, crashes between animals and vehicles fell by 91%. Officials expected a fall of 90%.
The changes help drivers too. Traffic delays fell by 9% because fewer crashes blocked the road. Colorado is looking at six more places for animal bridges. One planned bridge will help mountain sheep cross safely.
