How Apple's laptops changed over 20 years

Apple helped change the look, screens and speed of laptops. But some changes made its computers less useful for work.

Apple introduced the first MacBook and MacBook Pro in 2006. They used Intel chips, the small parts inside computers that do the main work. Other computers used these chips too. The MacBook Pro had a thinner metal body than the earlier PowerBook G4.

In 2008, Apple introduced MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models with bodies made from one piece of aluminium. These bodies were strong and light. The thin MacBook Air also helped encourage other companies to make very small, light laptops. In 2012, the MacBook Pro got a much sharper screen, and other companies worked to improve their screens too.

Apple changed the MacBook Pro again in 2016 and added the Touch Bar. The laptop became thinner and lighter, but Apple removed several places to connect other equipment. Users no longer had a built-in place to put an SD memory card. They also lost the HDMI connection for a screen.

In 2020, Apple started using its own M1 chip. Its laptops became faster and could work much longer between charges. Apple brought back the card reader and HDMI connection on MacBook Pro models in 2021. Microsoft later worked with Qualcomm on laptops to compete with Apple's speed and battery life.
