EU presents new plan for the Arctic

The EU wants to improve safety in the Arctic, protect important cables and use more clean energy.

The European Union presented its new Arctic plan on 20 October. It puts safety first. The ice is melting, and new sea routes are opening. Russia is increasing its military activity. China is doing more trade there. US President Donald Trump also threatened to take control of Greenland.

The EU wants more ships that break ice. It also plans a centre to protect and repair cables under the sea. These cables carry information. The EU wants better transport links with the Arctic too.

The plan supports clean energy, including wind power. The EU says it will not drill for oil or gas in the Arctic. It will not buy oil or gas from new projects there.
