Dirty air may raise the risk of eye disease

Scientists found a link between dirty air and two eye diseases. But this does not prove that dirty air causes them.

Getting older raises the risk of two eye diseases. Glaucoma harms the connection between the eye and the brain. It can cause people to lose their sight forever. Cataracts make the clear part inside the eye cloudy. This makes it hard to see.

Scientists looked at 41 studies. Together, these studies involved millions of people in East Asia and the UK. People with more dirty air around them had a higher risk of these diseases. The link was clearest for very small bits of dirt in the air.

The studies show a link. They do not prove that dirty air causes these eye problems.
