Brazil’s Amazon lost 3,335 square kilometres of forest between August 2025 and July 2026. This was 41.8 per cent less than the year before. It was the lowest level since records began in 1988.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva brought back stronger rules to protect forests. His government also increased efforts to stop people from breaking these rules.
But risks remain. El Niño, a warming of Pacific Ocean waters, can bring hotter, drier weather and more fires. Lula faces Flávio Bolsonaro in a final vote for president on 25 October. Experts warn that a win for Bolsonaro could lead to weaker forest protection. His team says he supports protecting the environment.
