The Black Ball is now third among Spanish films for money from ticket sales. By November 1, it earned €36.7 million and drew 5.4 million people. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi directed it. Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close star in the film, and Federico García Lorca inspired it.
The film also drew younger people than drama films usually do. Almost 40% of people in a Rentrak survey were under 35. Women were more than 62% of the group. The film is also on a first list of possible choices to represent Spain at the 2027 Oscars.
Movie theaters in Spain made €489.4 million from tickets in the first 41 weeks of 2026. This was a 40% rise. It was also 8% above the average for the same weeks before the pandemic.
But the number of people going to the movies is still below earlier levels. From January to September, that number rose 29% compared with 2025. It was still 13% below the average for 2017 to 2019.
