British actor Patrick Stewart has died at 86 at his home in Los Angeles. His family shared the news on his official social media accounts. He had Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, two illnesses that affect memory and thinking. His wife, Sunny, was with him at home.
Stewart played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994. He played the leader of a spaceship for seven seasons and then in four movies. He returned in Star Trek: Picard from 2020 to 2023. He also played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies, starting in 2000.
Stewart began his acting career on stage and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. He often performed A Christmas Carol alone and played every character. Queen Elizabeth II gave him the title of knight in 2010. He also helped people who faced violence at home.
Actors William Shatner, George Takei, and Hugh Jackman shared kind words about Stewart after his death. Shatner remembered him as a friend and a great actor. Jackman said he learned a lot from him. Stewart leaves his wife, Sunny Ozell, and two adult children.
