Sony to End Physical PlayStation Disc Production in 2028

Sony has announced that it will end physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. From that point, new titles for PlayStation consoles will be sold only as digital download codes, either through the PlayStation Store or in retail shops. The company says this decision reflects a long shift in player habits toward digital buying. Today, more than 85% of PlayStation game sales already take place through digital stores. The move is likely to affect collectors and the second-hand market, because trade-ins, resale, and lending will no longer work for these new games. It also suggests that future PlayStation hardware may not include a standard disc drive.
