Apple Acknowledges Early iPhone Duo Screen Failures

Apple is offering replacements for affected iPhone Duos after reports of cracked inner screens. Repair experts suspect the hinge, but the cause remains uncertain.

Apple has acknowledged an inner-screen problem affecting a small number of iPhone Duo phones. The Duo, which starts at $1,999, is Apple's first foldable phone. According to the company, most units are not affected, and faulty screens tend to fail soon after first use.

Some owners reported cracks after using their phones for only hours or days. They described hearing a crunch while opening the device, followed by damage near the center fold. Bright lines and white patches also appeared on some screens.

Repair group iFixit took the phone apart and developed a possible explanation involving the hinge, the mechanism that lets it fold. A support bar may not move down far enough, allowing the flexible screen to press against it. This could create a point of excessive pressure, although the exact cause has not been confirmed.

Apple says owners experiencing display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Some customers have already received replacement phones in stores, while others are waiting because supplies are limited. Preorders sold out within minutes, and the phone went on sale in stores on the Friday before Apple's response.
