Sony Brings Horror Game Mouthwashing to Film

Sony has bought the rights to turn Mouthwashing into a film. Karyn Kusama is attached to direct the project, which follows a spaceship crew losing touch with reality.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the rights to make a film based on Mouthwashing, a horror game developed by Wrong Organ. Karyn Kusama is attached to direct the project, although it does not yet have a release date. Her previous films include Jennifer's Body and The Invitation.

Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who wrote The Invitation, will write the film. Scott Derrickson will serve as producer; he directed The Black Phone and Sinister. The project brings together several filmmakers with experience in horror.

Mouthwashing follows the crew of a stranded spaceship as they gradually lose touch with reality. Rather than relying heavily on jump scares, or sudden frightening moments, the game uses serious themes and strange, dreamlike images. Its style is more grounded than the horror in Resident Evil, another game series adapted for film.

The game originally launched on PC in 2024, and it is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Players can also access it through Xbox Game Pass. These options allow more people to experience the game's story before the film arrives.
