Sony Acquires Mouthwashing Film Rights With Karyn Kusama Attached

Karyn Kusama is attached to direct Sony's adaptation of Mouthwashing, with a screenplay by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. The psychological horror game has also expanded beyond PC to consoles and Xbox Game Pass.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the film rights to Mouthwashing from developer Wrong Organ, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct. The project will adapt the independent horror game for the screen, though a release date has not been announced.

Kusama, whose directing credits include Jennifer's Body and The Invitation, will work from a screenplay by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. The pair also wrote The Invitation, bringing together collaborators from that film. Scott Derrickson, the director behind The Black Phone and Sinister, will produce the adaptation.

The project follows Sony's success with Resident Evil: Zach Cregger's adaptation of Capcom's survival horror series earned both critical praise and financial success. Mouthwashing, however, offers a more grounded approach to horror than Resident Evil's more exaggerated style. Its story centers on a stranded spaceship crew whose grasp on reality gradually deteriorates.

Rather than depending heavily on jump scares, Mouthwashing draws on weighty themes and surreal imagery. That combination distinguishes its approach to fear from the more playful horror associated with Resident Evil. The adaptation therefore brings a different kind of game-based horror story to Sony's film projects.

Originally released for PC in 2024, Mouthwashing is now also available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, as well as through Xbox Game Pass. The expanded availability gives players more ways to experience the original story before its film adaptation arrives.
