SK Hynix Says Memory Chip Shortage Could Last Through 2030

SK Hynix reported record sales of memory chips, small parts that store information. It says there may not be enough chips to meet demand through 2030.

South Korean company SK Hynix makes memory chips, small parts that store information in computers and other devices. On October 28, it reported its highest sales ever for a three-month period. Sales reached about $78.1 billion. The money left after running costs also reached a record, about $62.1 billion.

The company says customers may need more memory chips than companies can make through 2030. New chip factories take a long time to build. Making the newest chips is also difficult. Strong demand for advanced memory for artificial intelligence helped drive the company's results.

SK Hynix has long-term deals with 14 major customers. These deals cover more than half the chips it can make in 2027 and 2028. The company plans to spend at least $30 billion this year to make more chips.

The shortage also affects companies that make phones, computers, and game systems. Higher memory costs leave them with less money from their sales. This makes it harder to avoid raising prices. SK Hynix expects shipments of computers and mobile devices to fall as memory prices rise.
