Sigulda Combines Autumn Scenery with Castles and Forest Trails

Latvia’s fall capital offers a valley cable car, centuries-old landmarks, and access to Gauja National Park within easy reach of Riga.

Regarded as Latvia’s fall capital, Sigulda offers a landscape of yellow, orange, and red foliage just over an hour from Riga by rail. While the town itself provides seasonal scenery, particularly striking views await around the Gauja River. A seven-minute cable car crossing carries visitors above the valley, with several castles visible along the route. Sigulda also serves as a gateway to Gauja National Park, whose hiking trails provide further opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape.

Across the river, a short woodland walk leads to Gutman's Cave, the largest in the Baltic countries. Its walls bear carvings left by lovers over centuries. From there, another short walk reaches Turaida Castle, which dates to 1214. The main tower provides panoramic views, while exhibitions explore the castle’s history. Sculptures by Indulis Ranka occupy the gardens. Elsewhere in Sigulda, former manor buildings around the New Castle accommodate creative businesses. Visitors can purchase a patterned walking stick, a distinctive symbol of the town.

The train journey from Riga to Sigulda takes approximately an hour and 10 minutes, with tickets available at the station or through the Vivi website. Buses connect Sigulda with Turaida Castle, although their hourly schedule can mean a wait; passengers can pay the driver by cash or card. For a further excursion within the Gauja region, Cesis has a medieval castle dating to the 13th century and is around an hour and 20 minutes from Riga by train.
