Known as Latvia’s fall capital, Sigulda has trees that turn yellow, orange, and red as the weather becomes cooler. The town is about an hour and 10 minutes from Riga by train. Some of its best views are around the Gauja River, where a cable car takes visitors across the valley. The seven-minute journey offers views of several castles.
After crossing the river, visitors can follow a short forest walk to Gutman's Cave, the largest cave in the Baltic countries. Its walls have marks carved by lovers over centuries. Another short walk leads to Turaida Castle, which dates from 1214. Visitors can enjoy views from its main tower and explore exhibitions about its history. The gardens also contain sculptures by Indulis Ranka.
Sigulda is a starting point for exploring Gauja National Park and its many hiking trails. Near the New Castle, creative businesses use former manor buildings. Visitors can buy a patterned walking stick, a symbol of the town, before heading out for a walk.
