Shaquille O’Neal is working toward his fifth college degree, a master’s in criminology, the study of crime, at Sacramento State University. The 54-year-old basketball star has an estimated wealth of $500 million, but he continues to challenge himself through education. He began the program in summer 2026 and expects to finish in fall 2027 or summer 2028.
O’Neal left Louisiana State University to enter professional basketball, promising his mother that he would eventually graduate. He kept that promise and now holds four degrees, including a business master’s and a doctorate in education. He wants his children to see that age, success, and a busy schedule do not have to stop someone from learning.
For O’Neal, college offers more than academic knowledge. It teaches people to work with others, develop good habits, and complete what they start. Although he uses technology, he says artificial intelligence cannot replace practical experience. He encourages young people to value conversations with more knowledgeable people, where they can ask questions and learn face-to-face.
