In August 2025, scientists explored the deep sea near Argentina. People watched the trip live online. A starfish got a lot of attention. It looked like Patrick Star from the cartoon SpongeBob. A robot collected animals for the scientists. Most came from a deep area called Mar del Plata Canyon.
Later, scientists from different countries met in Buenos Aires. In two weeks, they named 57 kinds of animals new to science. They also named five new, larger groups of related animals. The animals included sea cucumbers, corals, and small animals with hard outer bodies.
The trip was part of Ocean Census. This project records ocean life before problems like climate change and digging for materials deep underwater may harm it.
