Naomi Osaka’s Pan Pacific Open campaign ended on Thursday when Slovakia’s Mia Pohankova secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory in Tokyo. Playing before her home crowd, Osaka was eliminated by a teenager who had celebrated her 18th birthday just a week earlier.
A wild-card entrant, Pohankova arrived with the 2025 Wimbledon junior singles title among her achievements. Her straight-sets upset followed Osaka’s opening-round victory over Jasmine Paolini and earned the Slovak a place in the quarterfinals.
Pohankova will next face Alycia Parks, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kimberly Birrell in Thursday’s round of 16. Leylah Fernandez also progressed, defeating Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6 after taking the second-set tiebreak 8-6.
The tournament had already lost Maja Chwalinska and Belinda Bencic to injury withdrawals. Chwalinska withdrew with a left thigh injury, while a right ankle injury forced Bencic out.
