Mia Pohankova beat Naomi Osaka at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday. She won 6-3, 7-5 in front of Osaka’s home fans. The loss ended Osaka’s time in the competition.
Pohankova comes from Slovakia and turned 18 a week before the match. The organizers gave her a special place in the competition. She won the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon in 2025. Osaka won her first match in Tokyo against Jasmine Paolini before losing to Pohankova.
Pohankova is now one of the eight players left in the competition. She will play Alycia Parks next. Parks beat Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday. Leylah Fernandez also won her match, beating Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6, with an 8-6 score in the final part of the second set.
Maja Chwalinska and Belinda Bencic left the competition earlier because they were hurt. Chwalinska had a problem with her left thigh, the upper part of her leg. Bencic hurt her right ankle.
