NASA is making new batteries for the Moon. The project is called SPEARS. The batteries use solid material instead of liquid inside. They could power tools and vehicles for future Moon trips.
In tests in Virginia, the small batteries survived minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit without damage. They could not work in that cold. They worked at minus 112 degrees, but not as well as at warmer temperatures. Small heaters could warm them before use. They would not need heat all the time.
The batteries are still small test models. NASA has not tested them in space yet. The team needs to develop and test them more before people can use them on Moon trips.
