Meta Plans a New Internet Cable Under the Ocean

Meta’s new cable will connect the US and France in 2029. It will carry huge amounts of information through thin glass threads.

Meta plans a new internet cable called Petal. It will run under the ocean between the US and France. The cable will stretch 4,300 miles. Meta will pay for it and run it. It will start working in 2029.

Petal will carry one million gigabits of information each second. Meta says no ocean-crossing cable has reached this level before. Each thin glass thread will have two paths for light. This design will double the amount of information. It will not need twice as much power.

NEC will build the cable system. Sumitomo Electric will supply the glass threads. Orange will manage the cable’s arrival in France and connect it to Europe’s network.
