Khaled el-Shahat found a stone with old writing on his land in northern Egypt. He told officials. A team then dug up parts of two large statues in Behbeit El Hagar. The village has an old temple for the goddess Isis.
One statue shows King Ramesses II with a double crown for Upper and Lower Egypt. Its head is about 5.2 feet tall. The whole statue was probably about 28 feet tall. The second statue probably shows the same king. It has a striped cloth on its head. Writing on a nearby stone gives the king's name. Ramesses II ruled Egypt for 66 years. Earlier finds also link him to building work at the temple.
