From a Comforting Teddy Bear to $5 Million in Support for Children

What began as Payton Obert’s effort to repay a childhood kindness has developed into a youth-powered charity supplying toys and essentials to children and families facing hardship.

A teddy bear given to Payton Obert at 18 months old became the inspiration for a charitable effort that has delivered $5 million worth of gifts and necessities over eight years. Provided by a charity working with children’s hospitals, the bear comforted her during a difficult period and remained close to her afterward. At eight, she decided to extend that kindness to others. Her first lemonade stand, launched in 2018, raised $768 to purchase toys for hospitalized children.

Community interest around Cincinnati helped the following summer’s proceeds increase tenfold. In 2020, amid hardship associated with COVID-19 restrictions, Obert launched Payton’s Pals. This network brought together eight stands in Cincinnati and Kentucky, collecting $35,000 in cash and toy donations. Payton’s Lemonade Stand became a registered nonprofit in 2021, organizing 100 young people to operate 30 stands. Support subsequently expanded to include fire departments, schools, Girl Scout troops, businesses, and sports teams. Beyond its original focus on hospital toys, the organization now supplies food, clothing, books, and school materials to children and families facing hardship in Cincinnati and elsewhere in the country.

The annual July fundraiser reached 100 stands across Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky in 2025, generating $150,000 in just three hours. In several cases, individual stands developed into lemonade fairs. The 2026 event raised $170,000, while the initiative’s geographic reach extended to West Virginia, Baltimore, and New Mexico. A project rooted in one child’s experience of comfort has become a broader community effort to provide practical assistance.
