Formula 1 has agreed to hold races in Rwanda for 10 years. The first African Grand Prix will take place in the early 2030s. Formula 1 last raced in Africa in South Africa in 1993.
Rwanda plans to build a new race track in Bugesera, about 25 miles south of Kigali, the capital. The first race will follow the track’s completion. The place will also hold concerts and other events.
Officials hope the project will bring visitors, jobs, and new business. Africa has more than 100 million Formula 1 fans. But Amnesty International criticized the deal. The group says Rwanda uses sports to improve its image and draw attention away from its poor treatment of people.
