The FBI says North Korea was behind a major theft from Binance around October 29, 2026. Hackers took about $6.3 billion in digital money. Binance is the world's largest service for buying and selling this kind of money. The FBI named the group behind the attack as TraderTraitor.
The hackers took money from online wallets, places where Binance keeps digital money. Binance says they may have first entered its systems through an engineer's laptop. But the company also found other security problems. It says the attack had several parts.
Binance stopped people from putting money in or taking it out during security checks. On November 1, it began letting people take money out again in stages. People could also put money in. Binance said it had replaced about 95% of the stolen amount.
The company was still buying the rest of the missing digital money. These types were harder to buy in large amounts. Binance put aside more than $6.34 billion of its own money to pay for the losses. It says its users will not have to pay.
