FBI Links Binance Theft to North Korean Hackers

The FBI blamed North Korea's TraderTraitor group for the $6.3 billion attack. Binance has covered about 95% of the stolen amount and begun restoring withdrawals.

The FBI has accused North Korea of carrying out a major attack on Binance around October 29, 2026. Hackers stole about $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency, a form of digital money, from the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange. The agency identified the hacking group as TraderTraitor.

The attackers accessed Binance's hot wallets, which keep digital assets connected to the internet. Binance initially said an engineer's compromised laptop may have provided a way into its systems. However, further investigation revealed other security breaches, and the company described the attack as complex.

Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while it checked security. On November 1, it began restoring withdrawals in stages, starting with networks and assets that users had requested most during the previous week. Deposits were open, and the company said it had covered about 95% of the stolen amount.

The remaining 5% consisted of tokens that were harder to buy in the quantities needed. Binance was purchasing them through market transactions and direct deals. It set aside more than $6.34 billion from its own funds, including emergency reserves, to cover the losses. The company said it would bear the financial cost rather than pass it on to users.
