A fictional cash challenge circulating on social media prompted inquiries to the luxury resort Ambiente Sedona in early October. The premise was straightforward: remain within the resort’s grounds for an entire month and receive thousands, or even millions, of dollars. When a caller asked about participating, a front desk employee explained that no such promotion existed.
That explanation was followed by further inquiries. According to property owner Jennifer May, four different people called the front desk about the challenge over a single weekend. Interest also reached the hotel by email: a luxury travel agent based in South Korea reported that several American clients wanted to enroll. Both the callers and the agent were asking about an offer that was not genuine, despite its appearance in social media videos.
For May, the challenge videos represented another encounter with misleading online portrayals of her property. She had previously discussed AI-generated videos that depicted the resort inaccurately. After discovering a new wave of misleading videos accumulating views, she raised the issue again. In this instance, the attention centered on a purported financial reward tied to staying on the resort’s grounds for a month.
