Efforts to Protect Children Are Not Keeping Up With Risks

A UN expert warns that growing dangers are outpacing efforts to protect children, despite changes in laws and greater international cooperation.

UN expert Najat Maalla M’jid has warned that efforts to end violence against children are moving too slowly. Almost 45 million children have been forced to leave their homes because of conflict, natural disasters, and climate change. One in five children lives in extreme poverty, including children in wealthy countries.

Technology creates opportunities, but it also brings dangers. These include online bullying, child sexual exploitation, and efforts to draw children into crime. Countries have improved laws and policies over the past two decades, yet putting these changes into practice remains difficult. Many children and their caregivers still struggle to access support. M’jid called for strong government commitment, supported by services and money specifically set aside for child protection.

A total of 55 countries have joined an international alliance to end violence against children. Launched in 2024, it helps countries turn promises into action by learning from one another and working together. M’jid also emphasized that children and young people are already helping to find solutions. Her message was clear: violence against children can be prevented and is never acceptable.
